Alexandra Apartments

Originally designed by Joseph G. Steinkamp and constructed in 1904, The Alexandra is the rehabilitation of an 86-unit Dutch Colonial Revival apartment building that has served senior Walnut Hills residents for more than a century. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the project preserves the building’s defining architectural character—including its distinctive gambrel roof, dormers, and classical detailing—while comprehensively modernizing residences, community spaces, accessibility, and building systems. Funded through Federal Historic Tax Credits, 4% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, and HUD, the rehabilitation required careful coordination between National Park Service preservation standards, HUD accessibility requirements, and the needs of an occupied senior housing community. The result extends the life of one of Cincinnati’s architectural landmarks while ensuring it continues to provide high-quality, affordable housing for decades to come.
